UK offshore wind moves up a gear
The year ahead looks set to be a crucial one for the UK supply chain, with offshore wind playing an increasingly important role in the renewable energy mix.
The UK, which is estimated to have over a third of Europe's total offshore wind resource, is heading towards becoming the EU's number one market. Recent months have seen an acceleration in activity at a number of upcoming UK offshore wind farms, supported by BERR and other Government initiatives, while upcoming announcements of country-specific renewable energy targets to help meet the EU 20% target by 2020 are expected to provide a further boost to the industry. Another key milestone was the European Offshore Wind conference and exhibition which was held in Berlin in early December.
To ensure that the UK consolidates and builds on this expansion to achieve an expected 40% share in European offshore wind deployment, BERR is working with UK Trade & Investment, the British Wind Energy Association and regional development agency (RDA) funded centres of support such as WindSupply to improve the UK’s penetration of overseas markets and of the supply chain for wind turbine manufacturers internationally.
Among the needs identified and being addressed to encourage the expansion of the UK industry are:
Growing a sustainable supply chain to the offshore wind sector
Providing an intelligent conduit between the UK supply chain and wind
turbine manufacturers
Identifying companies not currently operating in the wind market and
helping them to become involved
By providing a focus for such activities, and through close
co-operation with RDAs, devolved administrations and bodies such as
WindSupply, we aim to promote the UK supply chain, highlighting
opportunities, showcasing UK excellence and connecting people.
