Burnisland Fabrication (BiFab)
In 2009 BiFab, a UK manufacturing company, provided 6 steel jacket sub-structures to NorWind which were successfully installed at the German Alpha Ventus test site.
The substructure design was based on a product made by a Norwegian firm; OWEC Tower AS, and was based in pre-installed piles. The foundations have a quadro-pod design, which are characterised by their low weight and ability to support heavy turbines.
In the same year, they were also contracted to provide 30 similar substructures for the Vattenfall developed Ormonde hybrid offshore wind and gas farm in the Irish Sea
Prior to this, BiFab provided two similar deepwater jack substructures for developers Talismann and Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) for the Beatrice Demonstrator Project, off the north east coast of Scotland in 2006.
BiFab now has an extensive range of facilities, from 5,000 m 2 assembly halls and prefabrication workshops, to 60,000 m2 open assembly and storage areas, and load out quays with 20,000 tonnes capacity. The firm aims to manufacture 100 of the structures a year at its Methil facility, and is looking to comfortably employ over 600 people on the production line.
