Harland and Wolff
Harland and Wolff Heavy Industries Ltd, based in Belfast, Northern Ireland, have established themselves as a key provider for offshore structures.
Early in 2009 they secured a large steel assembly contract from the German offshore construction company Weserwind Gmbh (on behalf of BARD Engineering Gmbh).
They were commissioned to assemble and erect the lower sections of a jacket structure of an offshore transformer platform approximately 60m x 60m x 58m high and 3600 tonnes.
The floatable upper topside structure, approximately 20000 tonnes, was delivered to the yard by sea, via the 556m x 93m dock. The extensive facilities at the dock side were then used to offload and combine the two sections. Throughout this operation Harland and Wolff also provided facilities and support services to Weserwind Gmbh.
The jacket structure took just over a week to be transported to German BARD Offshore 1 wind farm, 90 km north west of the Island of Borkum.
Harland and Wolff’s history of ship building has generated a wealth of experience and facilities within the Belfast site. They are involved in a wide range of processes from design, through to manufacturing and repair, and their location makes them ideal for Offshore Wind Farm logistics in the Irish Sea. Previous experience includes project construction of Barrow and Robin Rigg Offshore Wind Farms whereby monopiles, transition pieces, towers, nacelles, hubs, blades, grout and cables were received, assembled, stored and discharged.
