Pelamis Wave Power case study
On the crest of a wave

UK company Pelamis Wave Power (PWP) is a world leader in marine energy through its pioneering Pelamis wave-energy converter, developed over nine years with public sector support.
’With support from the UK Renewables, working with the British Embassy in Lisbon, I was able to meet key people in the Portuguese market.’
Max Carcas, Business Development Director, Pelamis Wave Power
When the Portuguese government put a tariff in place for wave energy, it became a priority for PWP to get a foothold in the market. By working with the Department of Energy and Climate Change UK Renewables, and its close links with the British Embassy in Lisbon, the company was able to secure a £5.5 million contract to set up the world’s first commercial wave farm in Portugal.
Since its launch, PWP has raised over £40 million from investors and contracts, and is now developing other wave farms both around the UK and abroad.
Its most recent success was Scottish Power’s selection of Pelamis for its £10 million large-scale wave energy feasibility project.
UK Renewables is managed by Global Knowledge & Enterprise, part of the Pera Innovation Network.
