Carbon Trust – New Technology Acceleration Programme

The Carbon Trust has announced a new technology acceleration programme with the objective of reducing the cost of energy from offshore wind by 10%+. The Offshore Wind Accelerator (OWA) will fund large-scale research, development and demonstration (RD&D) activities through a co-funding arrangement between the Carbon Trust, Airtiricty, DONG Energy, RWE Innogy, Scottish Power Renewables and StatoilHydro. The proposed overall budget for the OWA is around £30m, of which the Carbon Trust will contribute up to £10m.

Projects have been selected by the OWA partners based on their potential impact on wind farm cost reductions or performance improvements in the short to medium term. The projects are:

  • Offshore Foundations

  • Wake Effects

  • Access, Logistics and Transportation

  • Electrical Systems

Most projects will be delivered in a two phase approach, with Phase 1 consisting of feasibility studies that will be used to advise the partners on the allocation of funds in Phase 2: the large-scale demonstration of new technology.

Each Phase 1 project will be managed by a ‘Technical Delivery Consultant’ (TDC), who will be tasked with delivering the project on time, on budget and inline with the requirements of the OWA partners. Tendering will begin for these positions towards the end of 2008 in order for work to commence early 2009. The allocated budget for Phase 1 is £1.5m and it is expected to be completed within 12-18 months of work starting.

Please visit OWA, for more information or to register your interest in this work.  If you would like to discuss the OWA in more detail, please contact Mike Hay on:
