DECC's UK Renewables Service Update
The new focus of DECCs UK Renewables Service will be to provide:
- Tailored advice on the latest developments in
Government policy – and on what opportunities there are to be involved
in the fast-growing UK renewables supply chain;
- Contacts in the renewables sector – inside and
outside Government;
- Support for companies thinking of entering the sector – including advice and contacts to find out more about the market support for renewables and the support for investment;
- Insight on the business opportunities in renewable energy particularly in offshore wind energy;
- A showcase of the UK offer in the renewables sector more widely – in terms of natural resource, business environment, infrastructure, policy framework & financial support (in terms of investment and deployment support), as well as the strengths of the UK's indigenous manufacturing & component supply chain;
- Facilitation for business opportunities by working
with selected potential entrants to the supply chain (coordinating
closely with DECC, BIS, UKTI and others to ensure lead points of
contact for particular companies), as well as in some cases
working with potential investors;
- The opportunity for businesses to participate
alongside the UK presence in selected UK and international
trade events focussed on the renewable energy sector.
The service will also in some cases facilitate contacts between existing UK companies in the sector and potential overseas customers or partners, as part of its broader promotional activity.
The 2009 was published on 15 July following a major consultation process. It sets out how everyone has a role to play in promoting renewable energy, from individuals to communities to businesses. Achieving our 2020 targets could provide £100 billion worth of investment opportunities and up to half a million jobs in the renewable energy sector by 2020.
The Office for Renewable Energy & Development has responsibility for driving delivery and deployment of renewables in the UK to meet the 2020 targets. ORED will do this by addressing delivery issues across a range of renewable energy technologies. At the same it will maximise the economic and employment opportunities presented for the UK by the increase in renewables.
Industry News
Up to £1 billion of loans for onshore wind farms.
Three UK-based banks – RBS, Lloyds and BNP Paribas Fortis – have been partnered with the European Investment Bank (EIB) by the DECC and HM Treasury, following the announcement in April’s Budget Statement that the Government wanted to get more EIB lending to UK renewables. The programme is expected to lend up to £1 billion to onshore wind farms over the next 3 years.
The cash, part of the additional £4 billion of EIB lending to support UK energy projects announced in the Budget, will help get building started for onshore wind projects which have been hit by the credit crunch, particularly small and mid-sized wind farms.

All Energy 09 Review
All-Energy '09, the UK's largest renewable energy exhibition and conference, held in Aberdeen 20-21 May, proved to be the biggest and best yet. Around 14 countries were represented across the 380 exhibitors and a total of 5,500 delegates from over 60 countries attended. The event has had a year on year increase, up 17% from the record-breaking 2008 event.
Did you know you can still get access to the All Energy 09 international delegation? For more information see the All-Energy Mission brochure. DECC UK Renewables Service made an impressive contribution to the success of the event and supported UKTI attendance.
