Wind

With Europe’s largest wind resource and the world’s most valuable offshore market, the British Isles are rapidly becoming a major centre for wind energy.

Turbine

The British Isles possess the best wind resources in Europe.  Driven by the UK’s commitments to EU and domestic renewable energy targets, development of wind powered electricity generation has accelerated dramatically.

With over 2.5GW of installed capacity already, the UK is set for a massive expansion.  Round 2 of offshore development is currently underway, amounting to 8GW of capacity.  A further capacity increase up to the total of 33GW was announced in Round 3.  As a result of these processes, the UK is set to keep its position as the largest market for offshore wind energy in the world for the foreseeable future.  UK companies are developing key skills in offshore installations, built on national expertise in marine engineering gained from work in North Sea oil and gas exploration.

Research and development is strongly supported through excellent facilities for blade testing at the New and Renewable Energy Centre (NaREC) in Blyth.  In addition, the public-private partnership Energy Technologies Institute (ETI) and the Carbon Trust  are co-ordinating key research into innovations to drive down the cost of offshore wind generation.

Excellence is present throughout the wind energy supply chain with world-class innovations and expertise in both products and services.  The UK is home to leading designers, consultants, technology providers, trainers and developers.  Specialist consultants and technology providers include Converteam, Econnect, Garrad Hassan, Insensys and Romax.  A number of turbine manufacturers have a strong presence in the UK, with market leader Vestas operating a blade factory and blade technology development centre on the South Coast. Many UK-based wind farm developers have expanding portfolios of international projects.

As a result of the dynamic environment for wind, manufacturers are being attracted to the UK.  With support from the Regional Development Agency, ONE North East, US manufacturer Clipper Windpower will develop the 7.5MW “Britannia" offshore design at Blyth, drawing on the expertise and facilities at NaREC.

The production of microwind turbines is another UK strength with companies such as Ampair, Marlec, Proven, and Renewable Devices selling units worldwide and into specialist applications.
